The average breeder has weaned and begun to let puppies leave for their new homes at about 8 weeks of age. This is very much like tending a baby, as dogs this young not only have very small bladders, they are for the most part unable to have much control over bladder and bowel functions. They require much care and almost constant supervision at this age.


Many folks do not understand how immature a puppy is at this age and assume when house breaking problems arise, the puppy is stupid or difficult to train. Chloe is a 2 year old chocolate lab, much loved by her family and very easy to train, this is because of the amount of love she is given by her family. You see, Chloe, like any other dog, will do anything to please the people she loves. The first lesson Chloe was given was her house breaking, she was kept outside the first time she came home until she went to the bathroom.


During the first weeks with the mother, she teaches her pups that the bedroom is off limits and shows them the appropriate place for elimination. One of the quickest and easiest ways to begin house training is to take advantage of these early lessons, and the pups instinct for cleanliness and keep him in a crate when you are not able to supervise. These come in all different shapes and sizes and should be big enough for him when he is grown.


The full grown dog should be able to stand and turn around. Although many come with a divider panel to use for the young pup, if yours does not you can use plastic to divide his crate. The theory on this is if he has too much room, he will assume on his own, that half is for sleeping and the other half is for elimination. So make sure the crate is small enough inside that he can not make that assumption.


This took the efforts of several family members but it showed her where she was allowed to go. When she was finally taken into the house, she was watched closely and whenever she started sniffing around she was taken back outside again. At night she was put in a box next to her owners bed, where she was kept when there was no one available to watch her. She was taken outside just before they went to bed and as soon as they got up in the morning.


When they left home, if they could not take her with them, she was again taken outside to go to the bathroom and put in the box, as soon as they returned she was again taken outside. This took a few days and there were accidents but she soon learned that if she went to the door, she could go outside and take care of her business.


Teaching her to sit was her second lesson, her owner would sit on the floor and play with her, teaching her to sit was a combination of holding her toy up above her head, at this point she would sit down to keep the toy in her site. She would also tell her to sit

while gently pushing on her hind quarters. When she was successful she was praised and loved on, she learned this one very quickly too.


Her third lesson was to lie down, again on the floor with Chloe, her owner would tell her to sit, when she was in the sitting position, she would then tell her to lie down and gently pull her front legs out and push her front end down. What this family now has is a very well trained dog which everyone enjoys having around.

Why did man choose to domesticate dogs only?

a. The fox was unsuitable because it was a solitary nocturnal creature. It exhibited no pack order and owe no loyalty to the leader.

b. Coyotes and other jackals do establish permanent pairs. However, they do not proceed to form packs. Neither the fox nor the jackals offered the safety of numbers.

c. Wolves, African hunting dogs and dingoes had well established hierarchies in their packs and the subordinates showed total loyalty to the leader. This was the primary reason why dogs were chosen by men for domestication.

Domestication is not restricted to alteration of behavior alone. It involves alteration of the physical characteristics of dogs. This is done through selective breeding. Selective breeding has helped us ensure:

1. Domestic female dogs come into heat 2-3 times in a year as opposed to wild wolf females which come into season just one a year.

2. Domestic male dogs attain sexual maturity at six to nine months as opposed to wild dogs who require two years.

3. Domestic dogs remain always potent while male wolves are potent only during the breeding season.

Some Common Mistakes Owners Make When Calling The dog.

Many pet owners complain that the recall command never seems to work at all times. The fault may lie not with the dog but with you- the pet owner. Think back and try to remember when the dog refused to obey your command. Did you call the dog

• when you were angry.
• for bathing, nail clipping or other activities it does not like.
• to put it on leash when it was prancing around in the dog park.
• to put it in a confined space.
• and offered absolutely no praise until it dog obeyed.
• and offered very little reward for obedience.

Another reason for crate training is that dogs love predictability. To know what is going to happen in any given situation makes him happy, and more apt to be the best-behaved dog he can possibly be.


A strong crate is the very basis of good puppy training. A wire crate with a lock is the best kind. Make sure it is large enough for him to stand up and turn around. But not so large that he can roam and wander around. A too-large crate will inhibit house breaking.


A crate that is just the right size will be perceived as his “nest”, where puppies never “go potty”. They will learn to hold it if you don’t make a prison out of it. Never leave a puppy under 8 weeks longer than one hour in his crate. He will soil it, after struggling and suffering as long as he can.


Put a nice pad in there with a bone. Start with placing a tasty treat in there, he will go in and get it. Do this several times without closing the door, let him come in and out freely for an hour or so. Praise him highly each time he goes in, make it all very pleasant.


Then when his attention is on his treat, close the door. Praise him quietly, “What a good boy, it’s ok, such a good boy!” In 10 or 20 seconds, no longer, let him out without a word, no praise, just a pat. Do this for increasingly longer intervals, but do not give him achance to get upset. You can do this several times the first day.


Make sure every training session ends on a happy note, this is crucial.


Once he sees the crate is his own private territory, he will go in there on his own, expecting treats and your attention. When he does, say, “Wanna crate?” with a happy face while getting his treats. Start leaving the room while he is in there for 2 minutes and onward, gradually. When you return, don’t make a fuss, just walk over and open the crate. In 3 days he will be officially crate-trained, ready to be left alone for an hour, no longer at first. Leave him gradually longer, slowly and carefully.


Q. Why do I want a crate for my puppy?

A. Because they love it is the best reason. They feel very safe and secure in there. Here are some more:

When you leave a puppy alone, he always has some measure of separation anxiety. This leads him to any behavior that brings him comfort, which is chewing, digging, or when it is severe, voiding his bowels.

When placed in a crate, he feels safe because nothing can get to him, nothing can harm him. He will sleep and chew and wait for you to return.

When leaving him overnight at the vet, if your dog is not crate trained he will cry the entire time, feeling lost and abandoned. With crate training, he is sure you will return, you always do. Of course the vet’s office is strange and will cause him some anxiety, but nothing like the pure terror he will feel without experience in being locked in.


NOTE: About crate-training, do not make a prison of his crate. Do not use it as punishment. Do not leave him there for more than 2 hours, just time for a long puppy nap and some chew time. After that he will cry. Do not remove him while he is crying. This will make him think he has to cry to get out. No matter what, make sure he is being good when you open the door. He will learn he has to be quiet to get out. Do not make a fuss when you are letting him out, just quietly open the door and take him out to potty. When he potties, praise him to high heaven! Dogs naturally do not go where they nest, but sometimes it happens. Do not scold, just clean it out with a bland face. He will learn the lesson. If possible, try to clean it while he is outside so he returns to a clean crate.


In 25 years of training dogs, I have never seen any one thing more critical for a dog’s well-being than good crate training.

Lack of socialization is the top reason why dogs bite. If the dogs are not socialized with children then a dog may not know how to react to the way children interact with dogs. Thus, while your pets are still in their puppy stages; introduce them to your kids and have your children befriend them.

Nurture the trust and respect that a dog gives you.
